Roadtrip in the planning stage

November 15, 2005
Laurie and I finally got our vacation time for 2006 scheduled last week so now it is time to start planning our future roadtrips! I’ve been doing a lot of this planning while I sit at my new ‘hang-out’; a Caribou coffee shop located in Inver Grove Heights. It is a very nice place with decent internet access. What more do I need!?

Tenatively our first trip of the year is early in January and will include a Spam run to Austin. Then we take I-90 all the way to Deadwood for a three, maybe four, day stay. On the way we will probably stop at Al’s Oasis and Wall Drug. I have become a complete sucker for Wall Drug. Right now we have four nights booked in Deadwood but this could be subject to change.

One of the reasons we are making this trip is that we are seriously considering Deadwood as a retirement location in about ten years. I’ve been doing a lot of retirement planning and a couple of the guides I’ve read all advise a person to visit their potential locations all times of year. The idea is to get an idea what you are getting into in terms of weather. Of course I am writing this while I sit at my Caribou wating for the first big Minnesota snow storm of 2005.

We will be picking up a lot of useful information while we are there in terms of purchasing a home and relocation concerns. We will also possibly pick up a subscription to at least one of the local papers and get on the mailing lists for some realtors and other local businesses. We will also find time to enjoy ourselves but one of the primary reasons for the trip is this fact gathering.
